Today is National cat day!

Wednesday, October 29, 2014 National Cat Day was founded by animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige. It is a celebration that takes place on October 29th every year in the United States. The National Cat Day website states that the holiday was first celebrated in 2005 "to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their life for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us."
The day is supported by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a nonprofit organization which also works to encourage pet adoption. An international cat day was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. It's National Cat Day Hug a cat, pet a cat, adopt a cat, pretend to be a cat: Whatever you do, it's National Cat Day.
The pseudo holiday is presented by Blue, which is a cat food, so take that for what it's worth. But we thought we take this moment to let you know that today is a day to celebrate cats. Because everyone loves cats. In fact, Buzzfeed would cease to exist if the world collectively quit taking pictures of cats.
Cat is one favorite pet....here are my hobbies.

USER EXPERIENCE REVIEW: PETCO.COM

We received great feedback from our first UX review spotlighting SignOnSanDiego and are really looking to keep the momentum rolling. At dt we are focused on bringing the community together and highlighting the companies and the people that make them up. So for this edition we’re staying local and taking you on a ride through PETCO.com…Brand Strategy 3 Stars PETCO is one of the most recognizable brands in San Diego, and really across the country. As they say on their website “With over 850 stores in 49 states and the District of Columbia, chances are there’s a PETCO store in your neighborhood.” Besides having a large presence in San Diego county, including 22 retail stores, they have their name on one of MLBs most beautiful ball parks.
Design: PETCO very recently did a design facelift so the site has a fresh look and feel. There were a few confusing elements we ran across related to the homepage design and the promotional boxes that we wanted to highlight. The border design on the large promo box makes it look out of place, like it doesn’t belong with the site.
It could also serve it’s purpose if it were smaller, a bit too big for the page. The calls to action aren’t clear on these promos. Users may stare at them, but what are they supposed to DO? Nothing looks like a button to click. The blue text on the bottom right should be click-able and it would help if it had an arrow or was a button, so it looked click-able. gift cards The links under the promo box all look like gift cards. Their style and shape make them all look like gift cards even though only one of the link takes you to the gift cards. Style: While the style is not going to win any awards it isn’t terribly bad either. The style is a little bland but consistent with most ecommerce sites – the point is to get you quickly to the product or page you are looking for in the least number of steps. Some of the styles are a little conflicting as in the case of the DIV containers which go from (rounded corners)
Quality of Material: The site has been well planned out and has a wealth of information. PETCO has a lot of products and they have done a good job organizing most of that information for their users to find. It takes a few steps to find it but sections like The Answers Den has specific questions and answers from the community which really add value to overall experience.
There are numerous product reviews and general comments on the site that help you make informed purchasing decisions. 3 design recommendations Update the border design of the promo box to be consitent with the style of the site Add in calls to action and click-able looking links to encourage flow Promote The Answers Den more to curious shoppers through the large promo box Social 3 Stars While the website is far from a social network, there is a very social (and viral) aspect to the site because of the customer interaction through product reviews and question and answer sections – much like an Amazon. The loyal customer base has created a wealth of content for visitors to read before they buy pet-related products. The Answer Den Community: PETCO ‘s The Answer Den offers a community aspect similar to what you see with Yahoo Answers – post a question about your dog, cat or ferret and chances are somebody in the community has an answer.
Note: I noticed that there are prizes given away for people that contribute the most content in form of answers. Since they are doing this transparently it does not feel as forced as if they were secretively paying people to generate content for the site.

How SpoofCard Can Help Doctors Call Their Patients On The Weekends

Doctors have to work long hours and are almost always on call. As a result, they treasure their private time and privacy in their personal life and this includes keeping their personal numbers secret from their patients. One thing doctors hate to do is make calls from their personal phones because they know their patients will then have access to them at anytime. It’s not that doctors don’t love their patients or want to be reachable when something is urgent, but the fact is that they would rather have someone screen their incoming patient calls to protect the rare free time they have. Answering services are very effective at helping sort through incoming patient calls during off hours and routing the most urgent ones to the doctor.

So what is a doctor to do on the weekends when they have to call a patient? That’s where SpoofCard comes to the rescue. SpoofCard allows doctors to make calls from their cell phone but show their answering service as their caller ID rather than their personal number. As a result doctors can use the convenience of their cell phone to call patients while having the peace of mind that their personal number is protected and that the patient has a number that they can reach them through.
As a doctor all you have to do is download our app (either for Android or iPhone) on your phone and add credits. From there you can call your patients on your personal cell phone easily through our app and your personal number will be protected.
Steps on how to make a Spoof Call to one of your patients:
  1. Open the SpoofCard App on your cell phone
  2. Tap on “Make a Call”
  3. Add your patients number that you want to call in the first input
  4. Add the number for your office or your answering service in the second input (Caller ID patient will see when you call)
  5. Tap “Place Call”

The Complete Guide to Special Characters

Not everything is as easy as ABC or 123. Sometimes your copy might require a character outside of the basic alphabet. That’s where special characters and glyphs come in. (Look around, they are more common than you might think at first.

Depending on your workflow, inserting a glyph can be as simple as a keystroke or a multi-step process. Much of it depends on the software you are using, typography palette and how the final product will be published. Here, we are going to take a look at special characters, examples of use and tips for success

Special characters have been given pronunciations similar to letters and numbers in a radio alphabet. The most common pronunciations originated with users of Unix systems. Each of the ASCII printable characters has multiple names – some formal, some concise, some silly (Intercal is responsible for some of this).[clarification needed][1]
ASCII special characters[edit]The following is a fairly complete list:[citation needed]ASCII CODE

Visual book notes: How to Read a Book

Whenever I want to pick up more tips on how to read better, I turn to How to Read a Book. This is not some speed-reading manual that overpromises and underdelivers. It’s a thoughtful, practical guide to getting the most out of your reading: picking the right speed for a book, taking better notes, building a topical index of books and their relationships with each other… (Still working on that!) The book has plenty of tips for reading specific subjects, and even includes exercises to help you improve your skills. If you already enjoy reading books, this is probably going to be a fantastic book for you.
If you’re working on getting more books into your life, this might have some tips that will help you read more strategically. How to Read a Book Mortimer J. Adler and Charles van Doren New York: Simon & Schuster 1972 Rev. ed. ISBN: 0-671-21209-5 It reminds me of David Allen's GTD Workflow Processing and Organizing. I've done it all individually but it is another thing to see it all come together on one page with pictures. As for dialectical notes, have you heard of IBIS (Issue-based Information System) It's concept map method that can be used on paper or software like Compendium where it was funded by NASA and used for eScience as scientists met virtually to discuss Mars desert reserach. Besides "wicked problems" and large organizations, it can be used for dialog mapping in meetings and I use it for personal problem solving. My wife and used it to decide to move to Japan with only a three-hour deadline before losing out on Plan A. My favorite introduction is this example of a father negotiating with his son about bedtime. http://eight2late.wordpress.co... I am totally going to do this with my kids when they are older.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR THE BEST SOFTWARE ANTIVIRUS?

The factors that contribute to whether any particular antivirus for PC product will stand out in our antivirus reviews are: performance, features, and help and support. Performance Performance is the most important product-selection criterion. To protect your computer and its data, antivirus software must do more than simply block malware that’s already been flagged as dangerous, and is therefore listed as malicious in databases maintained by the software provider.

ESET - Download NOD32 Here!It must also identify as potentially damaging fresh threats too new to yet be in the database, as well as neutralizing threats that manage to sneak by the filters and begin to behave maliciously. To measure such performance, we draw on data from AV-Test, which exposes every program we’ve rated to tens of millions of actual and potential threats. In tests that employ hundreds of workstations networked to dozens of servers, AV-Test assesses how well various security software products protect and repair damage. Features With performance as the foundation of antimalware product evaluation, it is appropriate to also consider the features you need and the features that would be nice to have.
Kaspersky Lab Canada | Visit the website. Our review shows whether any particular product also protects you from phishing, flags threats in email and instant messages, and recognizes when you insert a thumb drive so it can scan for threats. Help & Support After you identify the best antivirus software for you in terms of performance and features, you should consider the support offered with the product. All the products on our review offer support through email and phone calls, though it isn’t available 24/7 in all cases. While the antivirus protection included with Windows on your PC offers a measure of protection, it’s less than that provided by the best performers. Given the many online threats that can infect your computer and steal your identity, we recommend buying and installing the best antivirus software to ensure optimal protection....come here to know more about PC basic knowledge!

5 Tips to make you a better cash game player

I decided to share some tips about online cash games that are sure to help out your game and help you find all those extra edges that are sitting right in front of you. I hope you guys enjoy these 5 tips and I would love to hear some comments .
1. How to spot a loose player before he even plays a hand When you sit down at a cash game online you usually get asked whether you would like to post the blind or wait for the blind to come around to you. Most people like myself usually are patient and wait for the blind to come to them, because there is no point posting your blind when you're 2 hands away from it. If you're playing and you see a new player come into the game that posts right away, that's more often then not a sign of a loose player ready to gamble.
2. Use online cash games to your advantage Online is quite different than live poker. In live poker you might go to the casino and there might be a couple games running. Usually you have to put your name on the list to wait for a seat. In live poker you're also usually forced to play on a table and don't have the luxury of choosing which table you would like to play at. Online is quite different. You usually have a selection of 10 different tables and can view who's playing, how much money they have, how many flops per hour and the average pot. This is crucial information that could substantially help your game if you know how to use it. When you see a table that has a high Average Pot it usually means it's a loose table with a lot of money is being tossed around. You want to pick these games if you are a tight solid player. More often then not it's usually one guy on tilt that is playing every pot and making the action really loose. You might say "I hate playing against loose players". But in a cash game those types of players are the bread and butter. If you're playing a cash game with a bunch of solid tight players, the only way you're going to win a big pot is if you're a slight favorite. With a loose player, if you play solid tight poker and wait for the right time he will gamble as a big dog and you will usually be paid of very well. So scope out the stats when choosing a cash game online. Look at the players at the table, spot the regulars and stay away from that table. This little tip offers an extra edge in your profit per hour.
3. Don't be glued to your seat Online poker offers the luxury of being able to sit down at a game, leave a game, hop to another table or sit out for a few hands. So don't be stuck to your seat. Don't worry you won't lose it. If the game isn't good, and the table is too tight with too many good players, then leave. You should hop around and try and find the best game. Use online poker to your advantage and don't be scared to hop around and find the juiciest table. This is also the case for if you're losing. You need to have the disciple to leave if you're down and go try another table if the one you're at isn't good. To be a consistent winning poker player you need to look for all the little edges around you and use them.
4. How to spot rent money in No Limit Cash Games In online no limit cash games you can buy in for the minimum or maximum. While searching for a table to play at, look for a table that has a lot of minimum buy ins. Any regular professional always buys in for the maximum at a no limit cash game. The reasons behind that are:
A bigger bankroll is intimidating to a lot of players and can often give the first impression to new players to the table that he is a good player.
You always want to have enough money in your bankroll to cover anyone at the table so when you do have the nuts you can squeeze every dime you can out of the opponent. Most recreational players will usually buy in for the minimum amount and usually are playing with scared money or they are loose players. Take note that isn't always the case, but I'm talking more often then not. So use this to your advantage when selecting a game and try to find the weakest players.
5. When you're able to leave a game with a loss When you're able to leave a cash game after losing some big pots and you are noticing a change in your play, then you are a solid player. The natural thinking of the brain is to stay and get your money back. It takes a lot of discipline and skill to know when to leave a game. How do you think the casinos make so much money? It's because the natural thinking of the brain says I need to get even, while in reality they are not in the correct mindset and are usually on tilt and will almost always end up going broke. Once you can conquer this inner psychological trait that every human being posses, then you are on your way to being a good player. Every poker player in the world loses, that's part of the game. If you can leave a game with a loss without even hesitating then you'll end up winning a lot more in the long run. I know it's easy to say all this and read all this and agree, but while you're in this mindset and frame of mind it's the last thing you're thinking about. So to sum it up train yourself to leave games while you're losing, even if it's a few bucks.

  3. Run Skype and make a call.
  4. If everything is working properly you should see that Voxal displays the text "Status: Successfully processing!" and the microphone volume meter will be moving.

102 Snakes Found in Home in Canada

By Emily Scharnhorst One hundred and two snakes were found in a home in Canada and they filled up five pillowcases Apparently, these were "just" garter snakes, and it was in a rural area of Canada, and the snakes were just preparing to hibernate for the winter. But how does this happen? How do that many snakes get into a home? Recently a family in Regina, in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, discovered a few small snakes in their basement and called the local wildlife rehab agency.

Megan Lawrence, the agency director, said, "The family contacted us when they found a few garter snakes in their basement. ... They were finding more and more and ... they were finding them in their kitchen and their bedrooms, and they decided it wasn't a good idea to have them there anymore." Oh, really? So Lawrence and her partner used about five pillowcases to collect the serpents, and then moved the snakes into a bucket to count them. They then separated the snakes by size. She said the longest snake was nearly one meter, or a little over 3 feet, and the shortest was approximately 22 centimeters, or about 8 inches. A snake expert at the local museum, Ray Poulin, says nothing about this story is too unusual for folks in Regina. "That is about a normal amount," Poulin said. A hundred "garter snakes in a basement is about a normal amount. ... Usually snakes at this time are going down ... getting up to your house and going straight down." If the wildlife rehab agency keeps the snakes for the winter, Lawrence says she will be seeking donations for things like fish, earthworms, and minnows for feed. Personally, we are willing to donate whatever she needs to keep these things off the streets.... this also one my interesting of my hobbies.

Rare albino deer bagged by 11-year-old

Rare albino deer bagged by 11-year-old Michigan's Gavin Dingman shoots white animal with crossbow on hunting trip with his father; story generates wide range of emotional feedback October 22, 2014 by Pete Thomas
albino deer Gavin Dingman, 11, poses with albino deer; photo via Facebook An 11-year-old Michigan hunter last week killed a rare albino deer while on a hunting trip with his father. This week, the story is generating a wide range of emotional feedback on Facebook. Gavin’s father, Mick Dingman, told WZZM 13 that he and his son had spotted the white deer several times in recent the years, and that other hunters had talked about trying to bag the animal. An admittedly nervous Gavin used a crossbow from 30 yards to harvest the 12-point trophy buck, and the news quickly spread in hunting circles. “He kind of feels like a rock star right now,” Mick Dingman said. “Everyone is calling, all of the hunting shows and hunting magazines.” Sentiments being expressed on the WZZM 13 Facebook page, where the albino deer story has been shared more than 4,000 times, are somewhat mixed. “He should have let it live. There are plenty of others out there,” reads one of hundreds of comments. “If it’s rare, why the hell would he kill it?” reads another. “I’m fine with hunting, just hate the ‘Hey look, it’s different, let’s shoot it’ ideas. Shoot it with a camera and let the unique one live,” reads yet another. Deer-hunting in Michigan is an extremely popular pastime, so it’s not surprising that so many wrote in defense of Gavin Dingman. “Get over it. The law says it’s legal. Back off the kid!!! Way to go kiddo!!” reads one comment. “He paid good money for his license. He can use it for anything HE chooses, ” reads another. “Whether it be a brown deer or an albino buck, the state of Michigan gave him permission to kill it. Leave the kid alone. He did nothing wrong. He harvested a great trophy.” Some of the commenters criticized WZZM 13 for posting the story on Facebook, opening Gavin to criticism. “WZZM should stick with reporting news, not trying to make an 11-year-old boy feel guilty for shooting a deer, during deer season,” reads one comment. Albino deer and leucistic deer (not a true albino) possess genetic defects that cause the white pigmentation. Some native cultures revere the white animals, and believe that they possess the spirits of ancestors. This story brings to mind the killing last October of a rare albino “spirit moose” in Nova Scotia, Canada. Three hunters involved in that expedition were harshly criticized on social media sites, and ultimately issued a formal apology to the Mi’kmaq people. It’s unclear whether any native groups have spoken out against Gavin Dingman’s killing of the white deer in Michigan. The boy’s description of his big moment: “My dad was just like, ‘Take a deep breath. Are you sure you can take the shot? If you’re not 100 percent, we don’t want to injure it.’ ” The family plans to pay a taxidermist to create a full body mount of the deer. WZZM 13 cites a report that claims that one out of 20,000 deer are born albino. –

Honest Trailers - X-Men: Days of Future Past

X-Men: Days of Future Past is basically Terminator 2 with mutants. Screen Junkies explains the plot similarities: "An indestructible bad ass gets sent back into time without his clothes to protect a vulnerable young man with long hair who will one day become a leader and stop a shape shifter from destroying the future." Yep. I still enjoyed it! The following replies are approved. To see additional replies that are pending approval, click Show Pending. Warning: These may contain graphic material. The Quicksilver thing is so true. That was truly a head-scratcher moment when they sent him home. I mean really? With Quicksilver, they could have shaved off an entire hour of the movie and defeated Magneto several times over. He's so OP, he shouldn't even exist. And of course, everything I just said is exactly why they sent him home. It's still stupid though. Granted, I'm not calling Quicksilver stupid. He looked stupid in the promos but he's by far the best thing in this movie.
I'm hoping Quicksilver in Avengers 2 is just as awesome but at the same time, I hope he has some limitations to his powers otherwise, we'll have the same exact problem here. Completely agree. I don't see any real difference between Days of Future Past and Last Stand. Neither make a lick of sense and they have the same finale. Since they were written by the same guy, it shouldn't have surprised me. "With Quicksilver, they could have shaved off an entire hour of the movie and defeated Magneto several times over." You obviously don't understand how narrative works. This is like saying "well, since Superman can spin the Earth backwards and reverse time, he should do this with every villain he encounters, stopping them before they start". This is called "NOT FUN". Well, the obvious hand wave answer is, maybe they didn't feel right involving a kid— regardless of his ridiculously OP superpowers —in what was about to go down when he wasn't actually 'one of them' and thus not directly involved... Nevermind the fact that they just had him break into the Pentagon. (The kitchen scene is easily one of— if not THE —best scenes in that movie.) And who knows? Maybe it was Magneto's idea to send him away... After all, he did look like he came to a realization or remembered something after he thought a second about what Peter said in the elevator. (Magneto is the twins' biological father, that is canon. We may yet see the 'XCU' and MCU cross over completely.) I love how writers over the years explained the attitude problem he grows up to have as being a direct result of his powers... Have you ever stood in the post office behind a woman with 20 packages who wants to know every single way she can send them to Africa? It drives you nuts! You think to yourself, "Why do I have to put up with this? These people are so slow, they're costing me time, and it's so damned irritating. I wish I didn't have to put up with this." Now - imagine that the entire world was like that... except for you.

Each year Google ranks the year’s top “trending” searches, meaning that the queries are ranked based on their rise in search volume for 2013 versus the previous year.
The top 10 list of global trending searches for 2013 looks like this: Nelson Mandela Paul Walker iPhone 5s Cory Monteith Harlem Shake Boston Marathon Royal Baby Samsung Galaxy s4 PlayStation 4 North Korea Results like this would certainly seem to provide fodder for those lamenting the cultural decline that places Paul Walker and the Harlem Shake in such close proximity to Nelson Mandela – in the U.S., Walker actually comes in at #1 . But keep in mind that the 2013 trending ranking compares the rise in a search engine query compared to a year ago. Presumably, more people were searching for Nelson Mandela in 2012 than Paul Walker, so the film actor’s recent and unexpected death brought a very high year-over-year increase in 2013. Google’s larger set of search result tools provides the public with more granular data points on both Internet consumption and, of course, access.
This year Google has made available an interactive 3D global map showing the top search trends on any given day, from specific cities around the world. It’s possible, with just a few clicks and drags to see, for example that on April 17, “Margaret Thatcher” on the day of her funeral, was the top search term in London, while “Boston Marathon” and “ricin” were the top queries in Boston just days after the bombing at the city’s marathon occurred. What’s most striking about the map, though, is that it serves as a powerful visual reminder of the global disparities in Internet access. While the U.S. and Europe show data for dozens of cities, the vast majority of Africa is empty. The few cities that are shown are scattered among South Africa, Kenya and a few West African nations. A very stark reminder that the Internet, as ubiquitous as it has become in the developed nations, is still out of reach for the majority of the world’s population.

It is not a magic make you come here? or maybe it is a MAGIC?
